Blanco Road Shoulders Must Be Clean and Safe For Cyclists!

The Velo Club Monterey President, Matthew Sundt, is working with club members Jan Valencia and Phil Yenovkian to address road maintenance and safety issues related to the Blanco Road bike lanes to assure that cyclist have a safe commute route. Blanco Road is unsafe and often impassable by bike because of mud and detritus deposited by the local farmers. In addition, water spray from ag irrigation sprinklers soak the bike lanes and create a thick, slippery muck thereby making the road shoulders dangerous and impassable. California law prohibits depositing of rocks and dirt upon any highway. To date, efforts to stop farmers from dumping mud on Blanco Road have not been successful.

Blanco Road is designated by the Transportation Agency of Monterey County to include Class 2 cycling infrastructure and is also a “multi-modal corridor”, which means Blanco Road must accommodate all forms of transportation – bikes included. It is one of two routes that connects Salinas to the Monterey Peninsula.

In conjunction with Jan and Phil, the Velo Club Monterey President has been working with representatives of the California Highway Patrol, the Transportation Agency of Monterey County, and County officials to address the safety problems and diminished access by bikes caused by farm activity.

Velo Club Monterey wants to work with the community to address the Blanco Road problem. Please contact Matthew Sundt ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. We would also like to know of any attorneys that are experienced in resolving such matters.
