2010 MAZDA RACEWAY MONTHLY TWILIGHT RIDE SCHEDULE

Next Ride is Wednesday, February 17 Starting at 4:30 p.m.

MONTEREY, Calif., (January 15, 2010) – The success of the Twilight Bicycle Rides in 2009 inspired Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca to add to the Twilight Ride schedule for 2010. There are 12 rides scheduled and the kick-off will be on Wednesday, January 20 from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. in the paddock. This is an hour earlier to allow for the earlier, winter sunset. Light & Motion (cycling lights) will be joining the Twilight Ride to assist the cyclists with a full line of demo lights.

The Twilight Rides are informal and the 2.238 mile track will be open to all levels of cyclists, including children, throughout the entire ride. The cost is $10 per rider and a portion of the proceeds is donated to charity.

Sierra to the Sea

Sierra to the Sea is a scenic and challenging 8-day bicycle and camping tour through Northern California, June 19-26, 2010. Starting in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the tour traverses the Sacramento and Napa Valleys, passes down the Pacific Coast, crosses the Golden Gate Bridge and concludes at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. This is a fun week-long June bike tour put on by the Almaden Cycle Touring Club of San Jose, the same folks who put on the Tierra Bella every year.  It's camping, but they carry all your stuff and most nights have a hotel option if you prefer.   The price is pretty good compared to other tours, too. All the info is here:  http://www.sierratothesea.org/index.php

DON BIEBER – In Memoriam

DON BIEBER – In Memoriam. Above is a detail of a recent snapshot of a 49-year old inscription on Calera Canyon’s limestone quarry wall, located east of Corral de Tierra’s Four Corners.  It’s a lovely place, shaded by oaks and sycamores.  A cool memory of our popular runner and cyclist. Cindy was Don’s wife.  — BV 10.10.09

Don's Obituary can be found here.

Thanks to Dennis Renault for discovering this part of Don's legacy.

12 Hours of Humboldt

12 Hours of Humboldt

What: 7.4 mile loop, with 1,350ft of climbing
12hrs to do what you can.

Where: Arcata Community Forest Park, thru redwood forest, some fire road, and plenty of single track. yes... mountain bike race, on a rigid 29er.

For me I happened upon this race, as I was touring from Astoria to Ventura, on my Hunter 29er, shod in 38c CX tyres, the tyres I toured on, are the tyres I raced on. 2 days prior I had made a 113 mile effort from Humbug Mountain Campgrounds, Or. to Elk Prairie Campgrounds, Ca. in 7:17hrs, complete with minimal camping gear and food. The next day, once I had finished sightseeing along Golds Bluff Beach, while riding south, around Orick, I received a text message, informing me that the race was the following day. With this news, and my proximity, it was a no brainer, to pedal into town, and sign up for the race, about 50 miles down the road.
