Memorial Day Pie Ride Cancelled

Velo Club Monterey hopes you are continuing to enjoy your solo rides. We’ve enjoyed beautiful weather and amazing wildflower displays this Spring and we’ve seen lots of people out on their bikes.

Unfortunately to stay safe under the Covid-19 threat and abide by the current restrictions on large gatherings, this year’s Memorial Day Pie Ride to Gizdich Ranch is cancelled. Not only would it be unsafe to organize a group ride of 30-40 people, but Gizdich Ranch’s Bakery is currently only open for pickup orders.

We look forward to a Pie Ride with you at a later date.

Group riding and Coronavirus (Covid-19)

UPDATE 2: The updated Monterey County Shelter in Place order continues to allow us “To engage in outdoor recreation activity, including, by way of example and without limitation, walking, hiking, bicycling, and running, in compliance with Social Distancing Requirements…”

Note that  large sections of the Rec Trail are currently closed except to commuters.  Please be a good neighbor and abide by these restrictions.

UPDATE: Obviously under the current Shelter-in-Place and social distancing restrictions, there are no group rides. Be safe and keep everyone else safe by not riding with a group.

——————————————

The social aspects of group riding are one of the main motivations for cycling. As we are now living under the threat of the community spread of Coronavirus (Covid-19), the club would like to urge you to help minimize the risk and protect yourselves and your fellow riders.

To that end:

  1. If you are feeling sick or showing any signs and/or symptoms of illness (fever, cough or shortness of breath), do not attend a group ride.
  2. If you are in a high risk group or live with someone who is, you should strongly consider riding solo, or ride with just 1 or 2 others so you can more easily control your environment. Avoid groups of 10 people or more.
  3. While you might be able to stay the recommended six feet apart while riding, it’s not quite so easy to do at the start of a ride, while regrouping, or at coffee/beer afterward. Maintain distance from each other at stops. If you do ride with a group, consider skipping the post-ride get together.
  4. Be extra cautious about coughing, sneezing or clearing your nose in the group.  Cover your mouth and nose before coughing and sneezing. Bring tissues rather than blow snot rockets.
  5. Wash your hands and face with soap and water both pre- and post-ride.

Most of us learned to love cycling by riding on our own. Now might be a good time to revisit the joy and freedom of riding solo.

Be safe, be well.
